Shakira’s Decision: Choosing Love Over Career for Gerard Piqué

Following a difficult split from the football player and facing a $15.8 million tax fraud lawsuit, she has returned with a fresh album where she channeled all of her emotions and struggles into her music.

During a recent interview with The Sunday Times, which was released on Saturday, Colombian singer Shakira, 47, opened up about the sacrifices she made while in a relationship with her 37-year-old soccer star ex, Gerard Piqué. “I put my career on hold for a while to support Gerard in his football career,” Shakira shared. She has a new album coming out on March 22, titled Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore). The popular artist mentioned that there were numerous sacrifices made in the name of love during their relationship. Shakira and Piqué, who have two sons together, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, shared news of their split in June 2022. In a joint statement, they expressed their regret at the separation and requested privacy for the sake of their children, as their well-being is their top priority. Shakira and Piqué’s relationship started after they met during her promotion of the 2010 World Cup anthem, “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” and was confirmed on social media the following year.

In a previous interview with Billboard, Shakira expressed her strong belief in the idea of “till death do us part” when it came to her relationship with Piqué. She shared that her family and home were her top priorities, inspired by her parents’ enduring love after 50 years of marriage. Shakira hoped for a love like theirs, one that was special and everlasting for herself and her children. However, as life unfolded, she realized that sometimes things don’t go as planned.

Back in March, the football superstar finally opened up about his well-known split with a Grammy-winning singer. During an interview with Spanish media outlet El Pais, Piqué avoided diving into the details of how the breakup impacted him, simply stating, “I prefer not to talk about it.” Instead, he shifted the focus to their two children, highlighting the importance of putting their well-being first. “Every parent has the responsibility to prioritize their children’s needs,” he explained. “It’s all about ensuring their protection, and as a father, that’s where my focus lies.”

In the meantime, Shakira has been open about her stance on the breakup, addressing Piqué directly in her collaboration with Bizarrap on “BZRP Music Sessions #53,” which quickly rose to the top spot on the Hot Latin Songs chart and went on to set an impressive 14 Guinness World Records.
